A Neighbor

2/17/42

There is an accordionist next door to me
Who practices daily from one to three.
Up and down the scales he goes
And over and over the songs he knows.

From my window across the way
I watch him as he tries to play
Favorite seclections by Strauss
Such as Blue Danube and Die Fledermaus.

As he pushes and pulls his folding piano
The sounds come out fortissimo.
It's usually hard to recognize the tune;
So I always say he can't stop too soon.

It's hard to beat the noise he makes;
To listen to him gives me pains and aches
So I'll tell you what I'm going to do --
I'm going to play the accordion too.

Editorial note: While it may be that the word "seclection" is a typo, the possibility cannot be ruled out that it was a deliberate choice, perhaps as a portmanteau of "selection" and "eclectic."
