Loneliness

12/25/41

My soul is hungry for your presence dear;
I long for you to be near.
I need your kindly words of cheer;
Please, my lovely one, appear.

Remove from me this mantle of loneliness;
Your absence does my soul oppress.
I am lost in a wilderness
Without you, I must confess.

My hands and heart and mind
To you have themselves resigned
For no one else could they find
With all your qualities combined.

I long for the touch of your hand;
The sigh that only a lover can understand;
The reassuring words of love which command
My every act, impelled or planned.

Come now, no more must I wait;
This longing and yearning do abate.
Let's make our lives together great;
Come with me, be my mate.

Editorial note: The word "reasuring" in the fourth stanza is almost certainly a typo, so I have corrected it in the transcript.
